How to Help a Friend of Family Member that is a Caregiver

Many times we want to help a Caregiver, but we just don’t know what to do or how we can help, here are a few tips and tricks that could make a difference to a Caregiver.

Old couple in a room. Grandparents at home. Woman in a whire whirtInvite them to do something that is consistently on the calendar.

Schedule a standing coffee or lunch date.  Caregivers need something to look forward too.  Even if you find that they can’t get away, bring them coffee or lunch and enjoy it at their place.  If they have to step away for Caregiver duties, let them know that you are there to help-or if they don’t appear that they need help, you can occupy yourself.  The fact that you are there is a “Gift” to them.

Be creative in ways that you can offer assistance.

Are you going to the grocery store and can offer to take their list with you?  Maybe you can call them and offer to pick a few things up, or if you are a long distance friend or family, having some food delivered is a helpful way to chip in and help out a Caregiver.  Some ideas for ways to deliver:

  • Hello Fresh
  • Dinner Done
  • Shipt or Instacart
  • Uber Eats

Expect them to say no…A LOT!

Most Caregivers find themselves as Caregivers more than once in their life.  They deep down love being a Caregiver so much that they forget to take care of themselves and by the time they are ready to accept help-no one asks anymore.  Don’t stop asking if you can help….EVER.
